The Steps of Mama Killa
Los Pasos de Mama Killa was informed by the Andean territory’s cultural, political and historical context, presented at the sound festival ‘Sur Aural’ 2024 in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The workshop was developed as part of the festival’s creative residencies, taking into consideration an artistic approach to co-creation with women and gender minorities inhabiting Cochabamba. This workshop and the artistic project were produced with members of the Bolivian community radio collective, ‘Fuga Radial.’ We explored exercises on deep listening, counter-mapping, and technical aspects of sound production. During this four-day intensive workshop, we analyzed situated experiences in the public space at night as a safe space for women and gender minorities in Cochabamba.
These strategies, methodologies and embodied practices were shared among the participants during the residency at the Martadero Cultural Center and as part of the Sound Festival programming. As a result of the workshop, we developed a sound Augmented Reality walk, embodied through a night walk, emphasizing listening as a tool of resistance and self-recognition in the public space. The route was created collectively with members of Fuga Radial and the workshop participants’ situated experience.
