Radio Synthesis
The Radio Synthesis employs an FM transmitter in conjunction with a semi-modular synthesis setup to orchestrate an interplay between twelve portable radios, a PA system, and cassette tape sampling. The radios are tuned to a dedicated FM frequency transmitted live during the performance, creating a dispersed network of sound receivers across the space. These signals are continuously modulated through the synthesizer, generating tonal shifts, distortions, and resonances that vary according to spatial positioning and interference patterns.
A central feature of the work is the creation of a feedback loop between the radio transmission and the PA system, where broadcast audio is re-captured, re-processed, and re-broadcast, allowing sound to fold back into itself in evolving textures. The cassette tape sampling adds a temporal layer, weaving pre-recorded material into the live broadcast for contrast and tension.
By setting up this self-contained micro-broadcast ecology, the performance cultivates a heightened state of listening—not only between the radios themselves, but also in relation to the surrounding acoustic environment. The shifting phasing, overlapping frequencies, and unpredictable interference invite the audience to attend to the subtle, often overlooked qualities of radio transmission: its fragility, its capacity for spatial sculpting, and its embeddedness in the architecture of the room.
